This day tour takes in the beautiful cities of Arles, Avignon and Nîmes. The ancient city of Arles is built on the Rhône River and is crisscrossed by medieval streets and grand Roman monuments. Its focal point is the Roman Arena, which dates back to the 1st century B.C., which we’ll visit, along with the 4th-century Baths of Constantine, and the Roman necropolis of Alyscamps. Nearby Avignon, was once the seat of the Catholic popes, who fled there during the 14th century. Here, we’ll visit the grand Palais des Papes or the Palace of Popes, the world’s largest Gothic building, as well as the famed Pont d’Avignon, the 12th-century bridge. Next it’s on to Nîmes, a lively commercial center, which was once one of the most important cities of Roman Gaul. During our tour, we’ll visit buildings such as the magnificent amphitheater; the Maison Carrée, one of the best preserved Roman temples in France; and the nearby grand Pont du Gard Aqueduct – one of the largest in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
